Perimenopause
Perimenopause
Perimenopause is the 2–12 years before menopause and is a time of significant transition. It is often referred to as a second puberty due to fluctuating hormone levels that can result in a wide range of symptoms.
During perimenopause, there is often an initial increase in oestrogen followed by fluctuating oestrogen levels alongside a decline in progesterone. These hormonal changes can contribute to many common perimenopausal symptoms, including heavy periods.
Progesterone declines by approximately 75% between the ages of 35 and 50, therefore supporting progesterone production can play an important role in symptom management.
Common symptoms of perimenopause may include:
- Hot flushes
- Mood changes
- Insomnia and night sweats
- Changes in the menstrual cycle, including heavier bleeding, irregular cycles or shorter cycles
- Vaginal dryness and atrophy
- Low libido
